Key Tax Deadlines for Individuals in January 2026

As the new year unfolds, it brings fresh deadlines crucial for every taxpayer’s checklist. January 2026 is packed with significant tax due dates for estimated payments, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure you stay ahead of these deadlines.

January 2 – Schedule Your Tax Preparation Appointment –

January marks the dawn of tax season. To avoid the rush, it's advisable to secure your appointment with your tax professional now. Waiting could mean scrambling for spots as schedules fill up quickly.Image 2

January 12 – Report Tips to Your Employer –

If you're an employee earning tips, and you collected over $20 in tips during December, it's mandatory to report this amount to your employer by January 12. Use IRS Form 4070 or an equivalent statement that includes your details such as signature; name, address, and Social Security number; the name and address of your employer (or establishment); the reporting month/period; and total tips accrued. It’s crucial as your employer must subtract FICA taxes and income tax from these tips from your regular wages.

If your wages don’t sufficiently cover the withholding, the deficit will be reported in Box 8 of your W-2 form, requiring you to settle it when filing your annual tax return.

January 15 – Individual Estimated Tax Payment Due –

This date signifies the last opportunity to make your fourth-quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year. Missing this payment enforces a catch-up by filing your 2025 tax return and settling all taxes owed by February 2, 2026, to evade an estimated tax penalty.Image 3
