Key Tax Deadlines for Individuals in February 2026

As we enter February 2026, it's crucial to stay on top of important tax deadlines. This guide will walk you through your estimated tax payment options, the rules for reporting tips, and the deadlines for submitting new W-4 forms for withholding exemptions.

February 2 – Estimated Tax Payments for Individuals

If you missed the January 15 deadline for your estimated tax payment, you have the option to file your tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) for the year 2025 by February 2. Doing so, with the necessary payments, spares you from late payment penalties for the final installment. Should you need more time, ensure your tax return and payment are submitted by April 15.

February 10 – Reporting Tips for Employees

Employees earning tips should report any amounts over $20 received during January to their employers. Utilize IRS Form 4070 or provide a statement with essential details including your signature, Social Security number, employer’s name, and tip totals. Employers need this information to withhold appropriate FICA and income taxes from your wages. If your earnings don't cover these withholdings, the shortfall appears in box 8 of your W-2, requiring payment upon filing your annual return.

February 17 – Renewal of Withholding Exemption

Are you exempt from withholding tax? Remember that each year, by February 17, you need to submit a new Form W-4 to your employer to maintain your exemption status. Failing to do so will result in your employer applying normal withholding rates.

Weekend and Holiday Adjustments:

Should any deadline land on a weekend or public holiday, it automatically shifts to the next business day.

Extensions for Disaster Areas:

Taxpayers in designated disaster areas benefit from extended deadlines. Confirm if your area qualifies and check relevant extension dates through the following resources:
