Key December 2025 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

December marks a pivotal month for tax-related actions, including crucial year-end tax strategy, meticulous tip declaration, mandatory IRA withdrawals, and settling deductible expenses for 2025's fiscal year.

December 1 - Strategic Year-End Tax Planning

Initiate decisive actions this December to optimize your 2025 tax implications. Individuals who have experienced significant income fluctuations, marital or dependent modifications, or property sales in 2025 should prioritize scheduling a comprehensive tax planning session.

December 10 - Essential Tip Reporting Requirement

If you’re an employee who procures tips exceeding $20 in November, ensure you report these to your employer using IRS Form 4070 by December 10. Employers must withhold FICA and income taxes from these tips. Should your wages fail to cover this withholding, your employer will note these uncollected amounts in box 8 of your year-end W-2. You’ll need to compensate this shortfall when you file your annual tax return.

December 31 - IRA Withdrawal Deadline

If you reached age 73 in 2025, ensure withdrawing funds from your Traditional IRA before year-end to avoid penalties. Individuals born between January 1, 1952, and December 31, 1952, should consider withdrawing their first mandatory distribution for 2025 or opt to defer until April 1, 2026.

December 31 - Last Chance for Deductible Payments

Ensure all deductible expenses, excluding IRA, SEP, or Keogh contributions, are settled by December 31 for inclusion in your 2025 returns.

December 31 - Final Day Precaution

If your end-of-year actions necessitate more than a single day, take preemptive steps before December 31, as financial establishments may not operate on this crucial day.

Considerations for Weekends & Holidays:

If a deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the due date extends to the next viable business day.

Extensions for Disaster Situations:

Regions classified as disaster zones are eligible for deadline extensions. Check FEMA’s website and the IRS’s page for pertinent details and extension dates.
