Essential Tax Dates for Businesses in January 2026

January 2026 marks a crucial month for businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen regarding tax obligations. Strategic planning now is vital to maintaining compliance and avoiding penalties.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Tax Deposits

Employers using the monthly deposit schedule must submit their Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for December 2025 by January 15. This deadline also applies for nonpayroll withholding under the monthly deposit rule. Remember, employment tax deposits are to be made electronically, except for employers whose deposit liability is under $2,500 for a return period, who may opt to remit payments quarterly or annually with their tax return. January 15 - Tax Deadline for Farmers and Fishermen

For farmers and fishermen, January 15 is the deadline to pay estimated taxes for 2025 using Form 1040-ES. Although the income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) is due on April 15, those who miss the estimated tax payment by January 15 must file the return and pay any due tax by March 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.

Weekend and Holiday Adjustments

Should a tax due date land on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline automatically extends to the following business day that isn't a holiday.
